Before you go and start to get rid of hickeys, there are a few things that are important for you to know. First of all, methods using cold are best used as soon as possible after receiving the hickey. The sooner, the better, though within the first twelve hours is generally the best. Second of all, methods using heat are great for a hickey that has stuck around for two days or longer. Using methods that have to do with heat right after you get a hickey can make it much worse and make it much harder to remove a hickey! Lastly, yes, your hickey is bad and your friends will laugh or your mom will kill you or whatever, but use your head! If you are too aggressive with your hickey, you can cause scrapes, burns, or real bruises (which will turn greenish instead of red/brown). Be safe, and be smart. Without any further ado, go get rid of your hickey and leave a comment to let us know how it went!

Method One – The Cold Method

As mentioned before, this method is best used as soon as possible after receiving the hickey. When you get a hickey, blood flowing through the area leaks out through ruptured blood vessels and clots under the skin so, one good way to help is to stop more blood flowing to the area and thereby reduce the size of the hickey.. Making an area colder reduces blood flow.

Method Two – The Hot Method

Use this method to get rid of a hickey that has stuck around for at least 48 hours. Once, the burst blood vessels have healed, what is left is the blood that has collected under your skin. That blood will slowly disperse and be reabsorbed into your body. Heating up the area of the hickey will increase blood flow to the region, quickening the reabsorption of blood and helping to remove the hickey.

Method Three – Toothbrush / Comb

This method helps to break up and spread the blood around, making it easier for your body to clear away the signs of the hickey.

Method Four – Lipstick or Pen Caps

Just like the toothbrush method, this method helps to break up blood and increase blood circulation to the area. Try using this method several times a day starting a day after you receive the hickey.

Method Five – Peppermint / Mint Toothpaste

Peppermint oil and mint-based lotions can help to increase blood circulation. If you don’t have access to either of these, than a mint toothpaste can help as well.

Method Six – The Coin Method

This method can be slightly painful, but often helps. Make sure to be careful when using this method – don’t make your hickey any worse than it already is!

Method Seven – Massaging

Massaging a hickey works on the same principals as the toothbrush, lipstick caps, and coin methods. Massaging can help break up the blood clot and also increase circulation throughout the area, helping to get rid of a hickey.

Method Eight – Medicine, Medicine, Medicine!

There are a few medications, lotions, and creams that can help with the pain of a hickey and that can help remove a hickey.

Method Nine – When All Else Has Failed

You have tried every single method on this site, but the hickey is still there and you have the most important interview of your life in half an hour – what do you do? You may well be beyond the point where hickey cures are going to save you. It’s time to shift gears and learn how to hide a hickey!
